STI Novaliches - Clubs' Team Building @ Ecopark

By Damsel Leah Gatus, BA701E

How can we associate something that aims to encourage serious cooperation to something that provides enjoyment or amusement all at the same time? Is that possible? :)

Last August 30, our very own, YES (formerly e-FMS) club officers participated in the annual Team Building event of STI Novaliches. La Mesa, Eco Park was a perfect venue as it exhibits outdoor fun in the city without the hassle of long travels to distant provinces.

TREKKING

At around 9am the fun started. Sir Enriquez, who turned out to be our activity facilitator, led us in the 2.5 km walk in the little forest. He instructed us to be observant with the place. We had climbed 105 steps to see the view of the La Mesa Dam then went down through the slope. Almost all had a hard time going down the slope since it was slippery. I myself had a funny experience that time for I accidentally slipped, but then, it was fun as there were two others who had shared the same fate. :)

After the exhausting trekking in the swamps and muddy paths and cliffs, we finally reached the topmost part of the La Mesa, Eco Park. Joy came to all of us as we enjoyed the scenic beauty of the place. It's indeed a worthwhile experience.

SCAVENGER HUNT

The next activity was the Scavenger Hunt. This activity really tested our teamwork on how we would be able to find all things in the list given to us by Sir Enriquez with limited time considering that the objects were to be found on the paths that we had hardly traversed.

The lesson we learned from this activity was delegation. We had seen how delegation, cooperation and unified actions led to us to succeed. We were able to finish first. :)

COMMENDATION

We all knew how hard it had been to finish the whole trekking experience. Some of us had a trembling experience while traversing the paths, cliffs, and wet slopes. One of the YES officers was noticed by Sir Enriquez and was given due appreciation. She had shown a good example for all of us, that is, "Never to lose hope or quit despite the challenges we face in our life." And as a reward for keeping the faith and courage to do the challenges despite all of her doubts and worries, Ms. Janina Jayme (Yes Club President), was given a commendation by Sir Enriquez.

CHEERING

Our club (YES) ranked 3rd overall in the scavenger hunt. All the participants felt tired after gathering and presenting all the items from the scavenger hunt. To brighten us up, a friendly cheer-yell competition between clubs was held. On the spot songs, dances, jokes and any other pakwelas made the activity very entertaining. Luckily we won in this competition! (Another pack of wiggles for us!)

FOOD TRIP

In every adventure, it's very important to have a full stomach. Thanks to our facilitators headed by Ma’am Armie Calma, we enjoyed the snacks and meal they had provided us.

SEMINAR/CULMINATING ACTIVITIES

In every team building activity, it's not just the physical activities that matter but also the information that one gets from short talks shared by our speakers.

A Leadership seminar was headed by Dr. Joseph Adan, our club adviser. It was titled, "Awaken the Leaders in You." We had learned the important steps to develop one’s Leadership Skills. These are the following:

Humility.
SWOT yourself.
Follow your bliss.
Dream big.
Vision.
Perseverance.
Honor your word.
Get a mentor.
Be yourself.
Give.

Leaders are not born. They are grown. And we are all very fortunate for we are being molded by our Alma mater to become effective future leaders.

The last, but definitely not the least, was the culminating activity, which helped us apply what we learned from the previous activities. This activity was headed by Ma'am Armie Calma, our Guidance Counselor. She had explained to us the parts needed in a student's organization plan that would help officers to fulfill their duties effectively; thus helping us obtain the goals of the club.

TIME TO GO...

After day-long activities, though tired and sleepy, we all enjoyed and cherished every bonding moments we had with our fellow officers. We had learned and earned both at the same time. First, we learned to be physically ready for the challenges; learned bursting information about team building; learned to adjust with each other; learned to keep the faith and courage. And, we earned friendship as we go along challenges together, not letting anyone to be left behind; and earned memories that would never be taken away from us. :)

Behind the Winner's Back

By Megan Nicole Cunanan, BA301P

Meg, kinuha nila akong candidate para sa Ms. STI”, a nervous girl said to me.

When we heard about it, we were all shocked, excited and at the same time, nervous. We were shocked because we knew that Jobelle or Jobs did not have any plan of joining this year’s talent search; excited because we wanted to see her again on stage; and nervous because they told her about it three (3) days before the campus finals though she already won as Ms. STI 1st runner-up last year.

Instead of losing hope, we cheered her up and we told her that we would be supporting her all the way! We planned to have a tarpaulin showing our support for her but due to time and budget constraints, it did not materialize. We just prepared a simple but eye-catching banner. Former Ms. STI Jasper Mariz Ishiwata, helped her buy all the things that she would be needing in the contest.

Then came the campus finals! Each student had their own bet. But nobody knew who’s going to bring home the crown. While we were lining up for our attendance, Jasper came and we told her that she should make Jobs look pretty on stage and she promised to do so.

All the candidates were pretty and confident when they ramped on the stage. When Jobs came out on stage, we cheered for her as if there’s no more tomorrow.

Our hearts beat faster as they announced this year’s Mr. and Ms. STI winners. When her name was called as Ms. STI Novaliches 2010, we were all jumping. As tears fell down her cheeks, we could not help but feel the happiness she felt. Jasper congratulated and happily-passed the crown to her.

As her classmates and friends, our support for Ms. Jobelle Montecillo, Ms. STI Novaliches 2010, will never waver. We will do just the same in the coming Cluster Finals. Win or lose, we'll be behind her back!

STI Novaliches Campus Finals 2010

By Janina Jayme, BA701E

JULY 23, 2010—It was a hot and sunny day. Most of the STiers were ecstatic to flaunt their “casual” get-ups and watch the STI’s Talent Search and attend the Acquaintance Party at the Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman. Some spectators went at the venue as early as 11 AM—an hour earlier than the supposed start time.

At exactly one o’clock in the afternoon, the program formally begun with a doxology performed by STI Matrix—the glee club of STI Novaliches headed by Mr. Jojit Alcalde and Ms. Armie Calma. Then, it was followed by the singing of the National Anthem and the STI hymn. Engr. Hubert Abuan—the school’s Deputy Officer—also had his welcome remarks.

THE BATTLE OF THE BANDS

Out of the 14 bands that auditioned, only 3 were given the chance to compete for the campus finals. Three different genres clashed as Ela’s Thought, The Lost Vowels and All 3 Piece’s performances boomed out across the auditorium. All 3 Piece captured the judges’ favor as they emerged as winner with its rocking nationalistic song “Tayo’y mga Pinoy”.

STI IDOL

Proving that STIers are truly talented individuals, five students from various sections stunned the audience with their “birit” performances. Ela Dawn Antonio won as she sung “If I Don’t Have You”.

HATAW SAYAW

Five dance groups wowed the viewers with their bold, daring and dramatic moves.

Jennelyn Villasis of BA701E gracefully danced along with her groupmates collectively known as Tribo ni Pablo.

Amazed by all the dance teams, Prof. Rolando Bautista—as the Chairman of the Board of Judges-- announced Know ur Rank as the winner for the Hataw Sayaw.

MR. and MS. STI

Everybody deserves second chances.”

And that chance belongs to Jobelle Montecillo of BA301P. She was crowned as Ms. STI Novaliches first runner-up during last year’s competition. But she paved her way to success as she won Ms. STI Novaliches 2010 title recently. With her sophisticated beauty and undeniable wit, the title was meant for her. She also got the title for Best in Casual Wear.

Meanwhile, Ryan Roy de Jesus won the title Mr. STI Novaliches 2010. Other winners for the said event were: Archangel Sarco and Katrina Joyce Boiser (1st runners-up); Allan Manalansan and Ann Genevie Caballero (2nd runners-up).

The grand winners of the talent search will represent STI Novaliches in the cluster finals.

The Talent Search was fun and enjoyable. (Though I had a fever at that time!) It was also loaded of surprising numbers from the professors and instructors, and alluring performances from Anton Cruz and Shane Tarun of Who’s the Next Big Star. It was indeed a successful and splendid event!

Getting Ready for the World

By Janina Jayme, BA701E

“How much we receive depends on how much we believe.”

A memorable line quoted by an entrepreneur on his talk during The 18th Philippine International Franchise Conference and Expo at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City. It was a five-day event from July 14 to 18 participated by hundreds of businesses both locally and internationally.
Values taught by these business people: To dream and to fulfill this dream. Getting ready for the world—the theme of the event was about global competitiveness that every business should prepare for.

THE TRIP

The BA701E, with the go signal of Young Entrepreneurs’ Society (YES), attended the said event on July 17.

Of riding a sun-drenched FX, of taking the MRT ride (which was my first), and of having the jeepney ride for Mall of Asia loaded with hilarious incidences, it was totally a fun trip!

Upon reaching the SMX, we followed a queue of people who registered online for the expo. Two of our classmates weren’t able to print the proof of registering online. It was such a blessing in disguise, they queued to another line and were registered for free for which we didn’t understand.

THE EXHIBIT

So far, it was the largest franchise expo held in the Philippines. It occupied three halls of the convention center.

Only few marketers would entertain us knowing we are mere students. Nevertheless, we got the opportunity to collect the companies’ fliers and brochures. We also had the chance to have some free tastes of ice cream, pizza, lechon baboy, etc.

THE SEMINAR

We were able to listen to the mid-part of a seminar. The speaker talked about having the right attitude on venturing into business and the importance of being an employee of a company (for a stable source of income) and an owner of a business (for extra income). He advised the audience to take the risk in establishing business. He also spoke about knowing one’s values and passion, focusing on it as to business-making, and differentiating your product against competitors.

THE IMPACT

I appreciate personally the marketing strategy of Mary Kay, a provider of cosmetic products. Marketers approached us saying that we are entitled for a free facial spa as soon as we invest on their networking business for P 1,975.00 only. The marketers were friendly and the offer was enticing.

DPI Print Solutions exhibited the actual printing of tarpaulins which showed the quality of their service.

I found the Fried Ice Cream interesting as visitors crowded to watch its procedure.

The Blue Water Day Spa had a different marketing tool. It offered two face towels nicely and neatly placed in a box with ribbon for only fifty pesos. A free sack bag was given for purchase of towels.

The Go Negosyo sold its books at discounted prices.

THE LEARNING

In totality, it was a pleasant experience to visit this trade fair. Different kinds of marketers and various types of marketing strategies—I learned from them. I hope I can apply these learnings practically for my future business. And get ready for the world as well.

BA201P took SHOTS!

By Divina Gracia Juson, BA201P

School has really been stressful. Stressful yet challenging. One of the most unforgettable events that happened before the school days ended was having our PE Dance Competition spearheaded by Ms. Rowena Napay, our PE instructor. It was a very tiring but enjoyable experience for all of us. The said competition was held at Brgy. Sta. Monica covered court last March 18, 2010 at exactly 6 o'clock in the evening.

Before the night of the competition, we kept on dancing, practicing again and again. We spent most of our time thinking and preparing for the said competition. We were all undecided as to what costumes we would be wearing and confused as to what kind of music we would be using.

Finally, the much-awaited night has come! A really remarkable experience to us all! The rest of my classmates from BA201P and I were really excited as well as the other participants that attended the Dance Competition Night. It was a breath-taking event for us. We had mixed emotions - excitement, nervousness and happiness.

Mr. Jonnie Baraquio lead the program. The board of judges was headed by Prof. Rodolfo Bautista with Ms. Charisse Hementera, Mr. Jojit Alcalde and Mr. Francis Samsom. Our excitement and nervousness was compounded as we saw the presence and support of our dear professor, Dr. Joseph Adan.

As the last performers of the night, our hearts beat doubly fast as we took the center stage. As the music took an onset, we started dancing to the beat of LMFAO ft. Lil John's SHOTS. We danced the best we can. We felt fulfilled after finishing the routine.

"Yes!!! Natapos din!"

All our hard work did not go to waste as they announced that we placed 2nd!!!

Clubs' Fair 2010

By Lovely Lim Recio, BA401P

Love is in the air at STI!

It is every year that STI College Novaliches holds its annual Clubs' Fair for unwinding the students and professors from tons of workloads and stress. Every club organized within the institution was appointed to convene with an activity that will not only be reveled in but also be acquired knowledge or output from. Wherein us, the duly officers of e-FMS, together with our adviser, came up with the idea of having to conclude a singing contest (solo and duet), a dating game (a post valentine special), and a seminar (chocolate-making seminar) which not only endeavors to bring about amusement but also productivity and experience for our students; most especially our club members.

03 March 2010. As the Clubs' Fair 2010 commenced and different activities emerged inside the walls of STI, the organizers dealt with the influx of students rushing in to bask themselves with the different events held.

e-FMS's Summer Lovin'

After all the sweat and hard work dedicated by our officers and volunteer members from making the event possible, the activities held by e-FMS resulted to a total blockbuster! But evidently what captured most of our students' attentions was the dating game special wherein a searcher finds his/her love interest via judging the answers to be given by our three searchees from a prearranged set of questions and tasks prepared by the organizers. Two batches were set up in this event.

The first batch had a male searcher, Joel dela Cruz, an HRS student. Among the searchees in this batch were two e-fMS's members - Jobelle Montecillo and Mary Mhae Esparas both from BA201P. Joel ended up picking Mary Mhae at the culmination of their segment. The second had Karla Jacelyn Boiser as a searcher, BA601E student. Karla ultimately fell for the answers of a BSIT student, Arelle Sison.

The searcher and his/her chosen searchee were to be given a chance to have an exclusive date for two in a romantic restaurant wherein they would be alloted time to bond and actually get to know each other better.

The quixotic date was held at Buckaroo's SM Fairview wherein our participants indulged themselves with the restaurant's finest sumptuous repasts. Satisfaction really been manifested on that moment.

The said undertaking was an absolute triumph; our participants have really relished from their experience, and even hoped for another round.

We would like to acknowledge our duly elected officers (Lovely, Janina, Vincent, Damsel, Kenny, & Adam), volunteer members from BA601E, non-officer emcees and program partakers (Ishi, Thamara, Saki, Rio & Rhyan), our events' participants, the judges for solo and duet singing contests - Prof. Abalajen, Mr. Alcalde, Ms. D. Colili, and Mr. Dela Torre, the presence of Mr. Baraquio and our adviser Dr. Adan for making this event possible and a definite success.

Another accomplishment has been entitled to us all! Viva e-FMS!

Big-O in Choc-O Seminar

By Damsel Leah Gatus, BA601E

"There are times when CHOCOLATE really can fix all your problems."

Annually, e-FMS club offers activities that would help all BSBA students to look into opportunities which could be prospect business venture of theirs in the future. Last March 3, 2010, the club offers a seminar tagged as "Big-O in Choc-O: An Entrepreneurship Seminar on Finding Business Opportunities in Chocolate-Making". Ms. Grace Vinluan, an HRS alumna conducted the seminar. The event started at around 1:30pm in the HR Kitchen.

All were excited as Ms. Grace showed different methods of preparing chocolate into luscious recipes that were so mouth-watering, easy to do yet with reasonable prices. We were all in awe as she started the demo-cooking. Atop on her list was the rose-styled chocolate recipe. A simple melted chocolate was molded on a rose-style form, cooled, boxed and that's it! A perfect gift for love ones that looked so fabulous.

There were also other styles of chocolates that Ms. Grace taught us like the coffee crumble, cookies and cream, coffee choco, white choco, chocolate rice crispies and so many more...

With such scrumptious affair, of course, we never missed out one important thing. FREE TASTE! Students and faculty members just couldn't resist the temptation of the sinful CHOCOLATE (yum, yum, yum).

Still couldn't get enough of it? After the demo, some students were able to do some of the chocolate recipes, for there were still some ingredients left from the demonstration.

Another wonderful clubs' fair has ended. See you next year.

Time's Up! Raise Your Boards Up!

By Janina B. Jayme, BA601E

Joining a competition seems to be always at its first - cold and moist hands, butterflies in the stomach, excitement and jitters. How commendable the contestants are for being brave enough to fight!

Mind Challenge 2010 - Junior and Senior Levels - was held last March 2 in the HR Room and was facilitated by the e-FMS and Math.exe clubs. The Junior level started at around 9:30 in the morning. Team Avogadro, Babbage and Galileo competed. Unfortunately, the Team Maxwell got disqualified for having representatives from four-year courses instead of two-year ones.

There were three representatives for each team. Thirty questions were prepared and divided into three categories - Easy, Average, and Difficult. Think Twice questions were also determined in which the emcess - Prof. Gerlie Caspe and Mr. Jojit Alcalde - would ask the teams if they opt to "go" or "pass" in answering the questions. These have higher corresponding points than regular questions. But, deductions would be given to teams who would answer them incorrectly.

The same rules applied to the Senior level which started at 11:15am. But this time, all of the four teams had their match.

After cudgeling their brains on tough questions, Team Galileo emerged as champion in the Junior level, followed by Avogadro and Babbage. On the other hand, Team Babbage won the Senior level with Maxwell (with e-FMS members Janina Jayme and Jen Villasis) and Galileo (with e-FMS member Kenny Kelvin Medina) won as first and second runners-up respectively.

The event was totally fun. It was not just a battle of wits, but of courage as well. Nobody was a loser for as Nelson Robins said:

"...That the best of the fight is in the staying, lad,
That the best of all the games is the staying, lad,
If you give them the best in you."

Congratulations for a job well done! Mind Challenge competitors!

The Judgment Day - BSBA Thesis Defense

By Thamara Cuyo, BA801E

Thesis defense seemed to be a day of torture for us - the graduating BSBA students.

In college, thesis defense is one of the requirements for certain degrees. There is a lot of thoughts that came in my mind when I heard the word thesis defense. It was just like carrying the world on your shoulder. I expected that it would be so hard to do the documentations, weeks of planning, researching and editing. Most terrifying was how to respond to questions and criticisms of the panelists. I was so pessimistic that time because I thought of so many negative things that might happen. Moreover, I expected that the panelists would ask very difficult questions.

January 31, 2010. The judgment day! I was extremely nervous that time. I didn't even know what would happen to our presentation. Upon entering the thesis room, I felt uncomfortable and tense since we were the first group to present. I was so disappointed with my showing during the presentation. I felt that I was so much ready and prepared but felt short of presenting properly. All the ideas in my mind were all mixed up due to nervousness. I felt really bad and sorry for our group. Despite all that, when our panelists asked questions, I believe we had responded good enough.

And finally, our presentation was done. We were just awaiting for the verdict for the remaining hours since the verdict would be announced after all the groups are done with their defense.

The verdict! We got a minor revision! It was truly a good gift to our group. After all the sleepless nights, stresses, pressures, and conflicts, everything that we have gone through, it was a sigh of relief. I was also happy for the results of the verdict for the rest of my classmates. Overall, out of the five groups, three (3) got minor revisions and two (2) with major revisions.

I learned so many things from this experience that I wouldn't ever forget.

Believe in yourself and your success will surely please you...
