The 2nd National Capital Region Student Leadership Summit was conducted on July 30-31 at the Pearl Hall, SEAMEO INNOTECH, Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, sponsored by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This was in accordance with the provisions of Republic Act 7722 known as the "Higher Education Act of 1994".
This year's theme was "Advocacy and Awareness: Student Leaders in the Millennium Campaign". The program aimed to promote active, responsible and cooperative citizenship through student participation, self-government and leadership skills to uplift campus events on planning and management formation in various higher education institutions.
The program included current issues like climate change and Philippine Electoral Process. Other topics such as moral renewal program and good citizenship, social artistry, and public leadership were also discussed. Project W.A.T.C.H. (We Advocate Time Consciousness and Honesty) was also presented. A workshop about action planning was conducted as well.
Several resource speakers who are experts in their fields were invited to give their talk. They were as follows: Hon. Richard Alvin Nalupta (Chairman, National Youth Commission), Comm. Teresita Baltazar (Commissioner, Presidential Anti-Graft Commission, PAGC), Mr. Francis Joseph Dela Cruz (Public Campaign Coordinator, Greenpeace Southeast Asia), Mr. Joey Ayala and Ms. Pauline Bautista (UP College of Music/ UP NCPAG), Comm. Rene Sarmiento (Commissioner, Commission on Elections, COMELEC), Dir. Bayani Lagac (Executive Director, Officer of External Affairs) and Ms. Maria Agnes Angeles (2009 National Project Chairman, Project W.A.T.C.H.).
Delegates from STI COLLEGE NOVALICHES were Janina Jayme (3rd year, BSBA), Lovely Recio (2nd year, BSBA) and Mark Anthony Ticoy (2nd year, DIT) as they represent school organizations such as Enterprising - Future Managers' Society (e-FMS) and Young Programmers Circle (YPC).
"We learned a lot from the summit especially on topics of climate change and new electoral process. The foods catered were great", Janina explained.
"We have met friends from various universities and colleges in NCR", Recio claimed.
"We enjoyed the two-day summit", Ticoy said.
No registration fee was collected for the summit.
